Culture Week 2024

Culture Week 2024 is now complete! It was such an amazing celebration. The spirit week days were a big hit and a lot of people participated. Just to recap, this past week we had a Culture Week at Central. It was important because it gives students an opportunity to show off their cultures. All week long, we had spirit week days and everyone did such an amazing job dressing up.

On Friday, we had a big assembly where we got to see some amazing groups do their traditional dance, music, and singing by Naehomy Flores. Our first group was Monmouth Taiko (aka Taiko which are traditional Japanese drummers). Their music was so beautiful and a lot of students really enjoyed the show. It was super interesting to watch since a lot of students have never seen anything like it before. The drums had ties and other materials around them and their outfits looked like something you would find in Japan.

After that, our next group was the Nesian club. They call themselves “Nesian” because they welcome everyone and their cultures like Polynesian and Indonesian. They did traditional dancing and it was so amazing to watch. They had 3 different dances and one that combined everyone.

Our last performance was by Central's very own, Naehomy Flores and Josue Alvarado! She sang in Spanish while Josue Alvarado played on the guitar. It was beautiful to hear Naehomy sing and Josue play the guitar.

After the assembly, there was food and drinks in the Cafeteria along with henna, tables in the main hall with different clubs to join, boba, and Takis with chamoy, hot sauce, jicama, and tajin. As well as a corn-hole game for the students to play with teachers and PowerPeers running each event.

After school on Friday at 7pm we had a varsity football game against South Albany. There was a Kona Ice truck and the cheerleaders performed a halftime show, featuring “HOT TO GO” by Chappell Roan. The football game was so fun, with cheers the crowd learned, seeing our team win, and the student section was so happy. Finally, after the football game there was a dance. Just like the football game it was Luau themed and looked so much fun. There was music and dancing just like a highschool dance would have.

Overall, Culture Week 2024 was a big success. Thank you to PowerPeers for organizing such an amazing event and thank you to everyone who performed. It was an amazing experience to look at other cultures and appreciate their beauty!
